The story of Colorfast is one of remarkable resilience, innovation, and a century-long legacy of excellence. It all began in 1921 when Charles Henricks Sr. took a bold step and opened a small letterpress printing company on Lafayette Street in downtown New York City. In those early days, every letter of type was set by hand—a painstaking process that required skill and precision. But change was on the horizon, and just a few years later, the revolutionary linotype machine transformed the industry, automating typesetting and dramatically accelerating the production of critical financial reports. This leap forward allowed Henricks’ company to thrive.
Meanwhile, in the same bustling city, Earl Starkey and John Richards established their own printing plant on Thames Street. The 1920s were a time of economic boom, and both businesses flourished, riding the wave of prosperity. However, the stock market crash of 1929 cast a shadow over the nation, and like many others, these printing businesses faced the challenges of a contracting economy.
But what set them apart was their ability to endure. When the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was founded in 1933, requiring public companies to register and publish detailed financial reports, both Henricks and Starkey found themselves back on a growth trajectory, providing the essential services that powered the nation’s financial infrastructure. It was a testament to their adaptability and readiness to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world.
The late 1960s brought another period of expansion, driven by the rapid advancements in printing technology. In 1972, Charles Henricks and the Starkey Corporation made a visionary move by merging their companies. This merger created a powerhouse that could offer expanded computer and web press services, specifically catering to the growing demands of the financial community. Their foresight in embracing cutting-edge technology placed them ahead of their competitors, setting a new standard for service and innovation.
Then, in 2005, another pivotal moment occurred when Starkey & Henricks merged with Colorfast. This union expanded the company’s capabilities even further, combining the deep expertise of both legacy businesses with Colorfast’s own innovation-driven approach. Together, they created a formidable entity that could tackle the ever-evolving challenges of the printing industry.
For over 100 years, the Colorfast team has weathered every storm—economic recessions, market fluctuations, and technological upheavals—without ever faltering in its commitment to excellence. Through every challenge, Colorfast has remained a pillar of reliability and innovation, consistently delivering the highest quality service. This impressive legacy continues to define Colorfast today, a company built on the strength of its history and driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Doug Bird is the fearless and visionary leader of Colorfast, often referred to as the company’s "top dog" — the one who never backs down from a challenge. With a career marked by success and innovation, Doug brings a lifetime of hands-on experience in the printing industry. Starting in grade school as a printer’s devil and messenger, he worked his way through every aspect of the business. A graduate of the prestigious Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) with a degree in Printing Management, Doug has seamlessly blended tradition with innovation, elevating Colorfast to new heights.
Doug has been at the forefront of the industry’s technological evolution, from the transition of hot metal typesetting to computerized systems, to digital color separation, and large-format digital printing. Under his leadership, Colorfast has not only kept pace with these advances but has become a leader in the field, known for anticipating trends and consistently delivering the highest quality services.
A third-generation printer, Doug proudly carries forward his family’s legacy. His grandfather Peter began his career as an apprentice to Earl Starkey, eventually taking over the business, which was then passed down to Doug’s father and, later, to Doug himself. Over the years, Doug has driven Colorfast’s growth through strategic acquisitions and adapting to market changes, transforming the company into the solid, highly respected firm it is today, ready to take on any challenge.
Doug lives in New Jersey and commutes to New York by ferry every day. Outside of work, he enjoys fly-fishing and running. His two sons are competitive runners at St. Andrew's School in Delaware, following in their father’s determined footsteps.
